Our Story

Exceptional Dogs for Extraordinary Lives

Every family has a story. This is ours: how a lifetime of loving dogs became a passion for intentionally raising exceptional companions that enrich lives.

The heart behind Dorenlee

Hello, My Name Is Michelle Penner.

Together with my husband, Randy, we are the co-founders of Dorenlee Darling Doodles.

Throughout my life, I have been blessed with what I like to call heart dogs: those special dogs that leave a lasting imprint on your heart. Through each one, I developed a deep appreciation for the remarkable ways dogs enrich our lives through companionship, unwavering loyalty, the quiet confidence that comes from always feeling safe by their side, and faithful devotion.

Growing up, I was fortunate enough to always have a dog. They were my constant companions and faithful friends. As a schoolgirl, my Cocker Spaniel walked me to school each morning and met me again at the end of the day. Those simple days deepened my appreciation for the bond between people and dogs.

As a college student, I worked at Camp Easter Seal, a camp for children and adults with disabilities. The camp manager allowed me to bring my Sheltie-Collie, Lucky, with me. Watching Lucky interact with campers was unforgettable. His gentle nature and intuitive ability to connect brought smiles, confidence, and comfort in ways words never could.

Later, as a rehabilitation specialist, my rescue dog Maverick became a therapy dog for at-risk youth. Once again, I witnessed firsthand the unique ability a well-trained dog has to build trust, bring calm, and change lives in quiet but meaningful ways.

Where the program began

From Labradors to One Little Litter That Changed Everything.

When Randy and I married, we settled on an acreage in Central Alberta and had the opportunity to purchase a Labrador breeding company. We were thrilled every time one of our puppies joined a loving family, and even more thrilled when one went on to become a service dog, therapy dog, hunting companion, or deeply loved family dog.

After three wonderful years, our Labradors retired here on our acreage. Later, after our sons Ben and Caleb were born, we welcomed Dixie, a beautiful, sweet, incredibly intelligent Mini Australian Shepherd. Dixie was meant to be my companion around the ranch. Instead, she became the beginning of Dorenlee Darling Doodles.

The Dorenlee Darling Difference

We Were Not Simply Breeding Family Pets.

Families began sharing their experiences with us. They told us about the confidence these puppies were bringing to anxious children, the comfort they offered during difficult seasons, and the joy they brought into everyday family life.

It became increasingly clear that we were raising dogs that would become trusted companions, therapy partners, service dogs, and beloved members of their families.

Today, every breeding decision we make is intentional. From carefully selecting our breeding dogs to early neurological development, puppy evaluations, and individualized care, everything we do is designed with one purpose: to raise exceptional dogs for extraordinary lives.

Our hope is that every puppy we raise grows into a heart dog: a faithful companion whose love, loyalty, and quiet presence leave a lasting imprint on the hearts of the people they love.
